La sociedad del conocimiento impone un acelerado cambio social, cultural y económico que plantea enormes desafíos a los sistemas educativos. El paradigma sobre el que han funcionado estos sistemas en los últimos trescientos años responde a la organización de la sociedad industrial, se basa en la estandarización, la competencia y la privatización, los que podrían reemplazarse por un paradigma que ponga en el centro la diversidad, la colaboración y el sentido de comunidad, facilitando así sistemas educativos que formen para la innovación y la creatividad, mejor alineados con los requerimientos que los estudiantes enfrentarán al convertirse en ciudadanos.
