Este documento presenta los resultados de una investigación sobre las representaciones externas de un grupo de estudiantes de educación primaria, alrededor de la separación de mezclas para obtención de aceites aromáticos naturales. El proceso involucró el diseño, validación e implementación de una secuencia de actividades de enseñanza, en la cual se contemplaron reflexiones de orden pedagógico y didáctico relacionadas con el valor de las representaciones semióticas en la enseñanza de las ciencias. El enfoque metodológico cualitativo permitió interpretar los significados construidos por los estudiantes sobre la separación de mezclas.
