description This article discusses the main challenges faced by rural students as they transition into higher education in the Peruvian Andes —a crucial moment, as it confronts them with difficulties rooted in colonial traditions and in a national structure that overlooks the social and cultural diversity of a great portion of its young population. This exploratory study, based on a qualitative approach, captures the experiences of a group of students from rural backgrounds. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and subjected to thematic analyses. The findings highlight that the transition experience for these students is challenging both academically and socially. The root cause of these challenges lies in the mismatch between the academic and social capital acquired in their pre-university lives and the dynamics of the university environment and culture. This mismatch hinders both academic success and social integration during the transition year, and it leads to psychological and emotional distress, circumstances in which it becomes important to assess students’ resilience in order to mitigate the adverse effects on their well-being.

Este artículo explica las principales situaciones que enfrentan las y los estudiantes rurales al transitar hacia la educación universitaria en los Andes peruanos —un momento crucial en tanto los ubica ante desafíos arraigados en tradiciones coloniales y en una estructura de país que desconoce la diversidad social y cultural de muchos de sus jóvenes. Este estudio exploratorio, con un enfoque cualitativo, recoge la experiencia de un grupo de estudiantes de origen rural. Los datos se recopilaron a través de entrevistas semiestructuradas y se sometieron a análisis temáticos. Los hallazgos subrayan que la experiencia de transición de estos estudiantes es desafiante tanto académica como socialmente. La causa fundamental de estos desafíos radica en la incompatibilidad entre el capital académico y social adquirido en la vida preuniversitaria y la dinámica del entorno y la cultura universitarios. Esta incompatibilidad limita tanto el éxito académico como la integración social durante el año de transición, y lleva al sufrimiento psicológico y emocional, situaciones ante las cuales es importante valorar la resiliencia de los estudiantes, en aras de aliviar los efectos adversos sobre su bienestar.
